Head of Technology, Security and Resilience
The LMA recently held a virtual session with Darktrace on deepfakes.
Margaret Cunningham, Technical Director of Security & AI Strategy at Darktrace, explored the deepfake phenomenon, examining how cognitive biases such as false memory and the Dunning-Kruger effect make individuals more susceptible to misinformation and manipulation. She highlighted real-world instances where deepfakes have been used to deceive individuals and organisations, demonstrating the psychological mechanisms that threat actors exploit.
Nicole Carignan, SVP of Security & AI Strategy at Darktrace, delved into the implications of deepfakes for cybersecurity, addressing how they challenge Zero Trust frameworks and expose detection and response gaps. She outlined real-world incidents where deepfakes have been weaponised in cyber attacks and discussed the evolving role of AI in both enabling and defending against such threats.
